Insurer warns that greater care needed with large ships

Insurers Allianz are warning that carriers are not adequately addressing some of the safety issues that come with using larger cargo ships.

Their report comes after a spate of incidents including the stack collapse on the Zim Kingston and the groundings of both the Ever Given and Ever Forward.

An Allianz spokesperson claims that although the vessels are not inherently unsafe, the industry is not taking "due consideration of the risks", saying that "There are concerns over lean crews, a lack of sensors on board… and now we are seeing wilder and more difficult environmental issues with storms happening more frequently. There are challenges around these very large vessels that need careful monitoring and management."
