Economic Opportunity in El Salvador

Economic Opportunity in El Salvador

In November 2006, the US Government signed a five-year, $461 million compact with the Government of El Salvador to improve the lives of Salvadorans through strategic investments in education, public services, agricultural production, rural business development and transportation infrastructure.

From 2007 to 2008, as Procurement Agent for the Programme, Charles Kendall supported achievement of Compact objectives including the largest of the compact’s components, the transportation project, which physically unified El Salvador’s Northern Zone with the rest of the country, and enabled new economic opportunities for rural households, lower transportation costs, and decreased travel times to markets. Our work also assisted in increasing human and physical capital to residents in the Northern Zone take advantage of employment and business opportunities through the provision of vocational training, improved access to potable water and increasing electricity coverage. In all, some 1 million people are expected to benefit from the results of the programme.
