Many
universities offer accommodation in halls of residence. Most
of these halls of residence cater for both male and female
students, but all-female and all-male halls are sometimes available.
Halls of residence may be on the main university campus or some
distance away. Cafeteria meals may be available either on a full-board
basis or charged per meal. Some accommodation is equipped with
cooking and cleaning facilities.
Accommodation on campus or close to campus is more convenient
and minimises travel.
Although it is likely to be one of the
most expensive options it is well worth considering for your
first year because it will allow you easy access to university
facilities and student activities.
Cafeteria service is also convenient and saves time but is more
expensive than self-catering and may not provide the choice of
food which you would like.
Some universities maintain registers of approved houses or apartments
which are available to rent. Such accommodation may be furnished
or unfurnished and can be ideal for the more independent students
who are happy to cater for themselves or share with a group of
friends.
Students who wish to sample a little more of the culture of the
host country may consider staying with a family or a landlady.
This is particularly useful for those students who wish to improve
and develop their English language skills, and may be a good
option for younger students. The accommodation does vary from
university to university but full details will be provided by
the University of your Choice. Preference is often given to overseas
students in allocating accommodation but you may need to book
early to secure your preferred accommodation
