Bespoke Packing for Specialist Machinery

Bespoke Packing for Specialist Machinery

Our customer, a manufacturer of highly specialised drilling machinery, was asked to supply a bespoke machine for delivery to China.

The machine specification required it to be around 14 metres in length with a total weight of nearly 30 tonnes. Because of the problems involved in packing and shipping such a large machine we worked with our customer during the design stage to ensure that the machine was manufactured in such a way as to minimise packing and shipping costs as much as possible. Using our input, the finished machine was designed so that it could be split into two pieces, both of which were suitable for loading into open top containers rather than flat racks. Each part of the machine required protection with a moisture-proof barrier foil bag so we designed a base that would offer complete stabilisation for each piece during transit whilst also making it far easier to fit each protective bag. With rain threatening to cause damage to the equipment on arrival at our Feltham depot, we took the decision to fit the purpose-built foil bags onto the main pieces prior to removing them from the collection vehicles, thereby ensuring the best possible moisture protection. When the machines were ready for shipping we sourced the specific containers required through our sister company Charles Kendall Freight and completed the onward seafreight to the end user in Tianjin. The machines arrived in excellent condition and our customer was delighted to secure significant orders for further machines.
